The Harvest Situation on the Ground in Malawi
It has been a very difficult growing season in Malawi. The harvest in our community is about 40% of what families normally harvest. Many families are struggling to figure out how to keep their families from starvation this year.
The combination of inconsistent and inadequate rains have resulted in severe drought in our community. Drought combined with one crop planting of maize is devastating. Maize must be planted in combination with other crops like beans or pumpkin to replenish the soil. On it’s own, maize leaches the ground of nutrients and destroys biodiversity in the soil. We are working to show our community a more sustainable way to grow food, but it is a slow process!
We sent our Operations Manager, Edmond Phiri, out to the fields to give us a look at the situation on the ground.
