A Prayer for Our Babies

Ephesians 2:10 “We
are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the
good things he planned for us long ago.”

Ephesians 2:10 “We are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

I watched in awe as the nurse placed my tiny newborn grandson in the bed, my nose plastered to the nursery window. My husband pushed me gently and told me to stop pigging the best spot. I could hardly move. I could not tear my eyes from Simon’s tiny face, so new, so beautiful, so precious.

I laid my hand on Simon’s head and cradled him in my arms. “Prepare him, Jesus, to be all that you created him to be.”

I imagine Mary that first Christmas morning, laying her hand on Jesus’ head and cradling him in her arms. Praying, “Prepare him, Father, to be all you created him to be.”

Genesis 1:2b says, “And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.” That word “hovering” in Hebrew is also used in Deuteronomy 32:11. “Like an eagle that rouses her chicks and hovers over her young, so he spread his wings to take them up and carried them safely on his pinions.” Imagine with me, the Spirit of God hovering over the waters, planning and preparing for his children.

Ephesians 1: 4-6 says, ‘4 Before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. 5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. 6 So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son.’

Sometime in July, I was in my tent praying one night. The drums from the local villages were beating and a few interns were laughing outside in the crisp night air. A rooster confused over the hour crowed out his morning alarm. Slowly the night settled into peace and I continued to pray. Suddenly the thought came to me to prepare a home for babies. “What?” I questioned. The thought continued, “I’m going to give you babies soon and you need to be ready.” I turned over to sleep.

The next morning, we began to enroll new children in our orphan program. An old grandfather walked up to me, a baby in his arms. His name is Boniface and he was our first baby!

In the past 3 months, we’ve received 3 babies and a toddler into Patricia’s Home. We are building this amazing new home as quickly as possible. The walls are going up this week and we hope to be putting the roof on soon. Then we will move the girls and the babies into their new home.

Will you join me in praying for our babies that Jesus will prepare them to be all that he created them to be? Perhaps you would like to pray that prayer over your own children, too. God is hovering over them, planning and preparing the way for his children. We want to be hovering over them with our own prayers!

Father, thank you for sending Jesus to be with us. Thank you for adopting us into your family through your Son, Jesus. Bless our babies, hover over them, prepare them to be all you created them to be.
